How to Get Started at FCPS

Clinicians with current credentials can typically be placed within 2 to 4 weeks. Each step must be complete before the next begins, so the fastest way to move is to respond promptly at every stage.

1

Apply Online

Submit your application through our careers page. Upload your résumé as a PDF, along with your license and current BLS/CPR card. A photo of a paper document can't be processed — your résumé is submitted to FCPS exactly as you send it, so it must be a file we can print and upload.

Include your license number, certifications, and availability. Our team responds within 1–2 business days.

2

Phone Interview

We'll talk through your clinical background, the specialized skills the assignment may require, your availability for a Monday–Friday school-day schedule, and whether you're open to riding the bus with your student if the assignment includes transportation. We'll confirm the pay range and answer your questions.

3

Credentialing and Clearances

Completed in parallel to save time:

  • Maryland license verified at primary source
  • Federal and state criminal background check
  • National sex offender registry check
  • 10-panel drug screen
  • Physical examination, including 50 lb lift capacity
  • TB screening within the past 12 months
  • Two professional reference checks

Eaglewings pays for all pre-employment screening. You are never billed and nothing is deducted from your pay.

4

FCPS Fingerprinting and MSDE Form

Two requirements specific to school placement:

Fingerprinting is completed at the FCPS administrative building. We schedule it as early as possible, because appointment availability is usually what determines your start date. Eaglewings covers the cost.

The MSDE form — required under Maryland Code, Education § 6-113.2 — asks your previous employers one question: whether you have ever had a substantiated finding of child abuse or sexual misconduct. Every adult who works with students completes it, including teachers, aides, nurses, and volunteers.

This is not a reference check and not employment verification. You complete and sign one short form; we send it to your employers. Employers have 20 days to respond and are legally required to complete it. If a former employer tells you they no longer complete these forms, send us their contact information anyway — following up is our responsibility, not yours.

5

FCPS Review and Approval

Eaglewings assembles your complete credential packet and submits it to the FCPS Health Services Specialist. FCPS reviews and approves each nurse, and determines the school, the student, and the daily schedule.

No nurse may begin an assignment before written approval from FCPS is received. Completing your screening makes you eligible to be proposed — it does not itself create an assignment.

6

Orientation and Your First Day

Agency orientation covers school-based nursing practice, student privacy under FERPA and HIPAA, infection control, professional boundaries, and mandated reporting obligations under Maryland law.

Before you start, we review your assigned student's Health Care Plan, physician orders, and emergency protocols with you, and validate any specialized skill the assignment requires. We coordinate school orientation with the school nurse and principal so you know the building and procedures before day one.

You'll clock in through the Eaglewings Hub, submit a signed paper timesheet at the school each day, and get paid every Thursday via Gusto direct deposit.

About Frederick County Public Schools

Frederick County Public Schools serves the growing communities of Frederick County, Maryland — one of the state's largest and fastest-growing districts. FCPS operates nearly 70 schools serving more than 46,000 students across elementary, middle, and high school levels.

The district provides Private Duty Nursing for medically fragile students, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) intervention for students with behavioral needs, and specialized instruction for students with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). Eaglewings supports these services with qualified W-2 healthcare and behavioral health professionals.

Serving all of Frederick County: Assignments span the entire district, including Frederick City, Urbana, Middletown, Walkersville, Thurmont, Brunswick, and surrounding communities. FCPS reviews and approves each clinician and determines the school and student assignment based on student need. We share your assigned location as soon as FCPS confirms it, but we cannot request or guarantee a specific building. Please apply only if you're able to commute anywhere in Frederick County.

Common Questions from FCPS Applicants

For clinicians with current credentials (nursing license, RBT certification, or teaching certificate), the typical timeline is 2 to 4 weeks from application to first day. Most delays come from credentialing (background check + license verification) and district orientation scheduling.
No. Eaglewings proposes qualified nurses; FCPS reviews, approves, and assigns. FCPS determines the school, the student, and the daily schedule, and we have no ability to influence those decisions. The parent or guardian of the student does not select, approve, or replace the nurse either — that decision belongs to FCPS.
No — school-based experience is helpful but not required. What matters is your active credential (RN, LPN, RBT, or MD teaching certificate) and comfort working with children. If you're a nurse coming from hospital or LTC, we'll orient you to the school setting during onboarding.
Private Duty Nursing (PDN) means you're assigned one specific student with significant medical needs — such as tracheostomy care, tube feeding, seizure monitoring, or diabetes management. You stay with that student throughout their school day, providing continuous nursing care as outlined in their care plan.
Most FCPS assignments follow the school-day schedule — typically 6.5 to 7.5 hours per day, Monday through Friday, following the FCPS academic calendar. That's usually 30–35 hours per week during school weeks. Summer, weekends, holidays, and school closure days are unpaid. If your student is absent or leaves early, your day may end early. Frederick County is a smaller district, so same-day reassignment to another student is not always available.
Yes — as long as your RBT credential is active and in good standing with the BACB. We'll verify your certification status and ensure your supervision requirements (monthly BCBA meetings) continue through Eaglewings.
We hire clinicians willing to commute anywhere within Frederick County. Assignments span the entire district, from Frederick City to Brunswick to Thurmont, and FCPS determines which school you're assigned to. We can't request a specific location or guarantee a shorter drive, so please consider the full district when deciding whether to apply.
Eaglewings does not maintain a paid PTO bank for school-based staff. You're paid for hours worked. Because school-based schedules follow the FCPS academic calendar, snow days, holidays, breaks, and summer are unpaid. Plan personal appointments for closed days when possible.
