Registered Behavior Technicians (RBTs) are the front-line practitioners of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in school-based settings. At Frederick County Public Schools, Eaglewings RBTs work directly with students whose IEPs or behavior intervention plans include ABA services — implementing skill-acquisition programs, running behavior reduction protocols, and collecting the data that drives clinical decisions.

Every Eaglewings RBT holds an active credential from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and maintains the ongoing supervision and continuing education required by the credential. Placement is under the clinical direction of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), and Eaglewings coordinates the supervision requirements so you stay compliant throughout the school year.

Our FCPS partnership runs on a 3-year contract with a 2-year renewal option — potential stability through 2031 for RBTs who want to build a school-based career without the volatility of one-year assignments.

What an RBT Does at FCPS

The day-to-day work depends on the student and their behavior plan, but a typical FCPS RBT assignment includes:

Direct implementation of the behavior intervention plan (BIP) — running discrete trial teaching (DTT), natural environment teaching (NET), or other ABA-based programs written by the supervising BCBA.
Data collection — recording target behaviors, prompt levels, correct/incorrect responses, and antecedent-behavior-consequence (ABC) data. This data drives every BCBA program adjustment.
Behavior reduction protocols — implementing approved intervention strategies for challenging behaviors, always following the plan and never improvising beyond your scope of practice.
Skill acquisition — teaching functional communication, self-help, social, academic-readiness, and pre-vocational skills, embedded into the student's school day.
Team collaboration — working alongside the classroom teacher, special education case manager, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, and the student's family through the IEP process.
Supervision meetings — meeting with your BCBA supervisor at least once per month for at least 5% of your direct hours, per BACB requirements.

One-to-one or classroom-embedded: Some FCPS RBT assignments are dedicated one-to-one with a specific student; others are classroom-based, rotating support across 2–3 students in a specialized program. We match you to the setting that fits your experience and preferences.

RBT Requirements

Active RBT credential in good standing with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) — verifiable via the BACB registry.
40-hour RBT training completed within the last 12 months of your credentialing, per BACB requirements.
Willingness to receive BCBA supervision for a minimum of 5% of your direct hours monthly.
Willingness to complete Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) forms if you've worked in an MD school system before.
Ability to pass FBI + Maryland state background checks and complete pre-employment health clearance.
Physical ability to safely support students, including standing, walking, kneeling, and (rarely, and only per the BIP) safely implementing crisis prevention techniques.
Comfortable committing to a Monday–Friday school-day schedule, generally 6.5–7.5 hours per day.

Yes. As long as your RBT credential is active and in good standing with the BACB, you can transfer to Eaglewings. We verify your certification through the BACB registry during onboarding. Your Eaglewings BCBA supervisor will then coordinate your ongoing supervision meetings.

Yes. Every Eaglewings RBT receives BCBA supervision for at least 5% of their direct hours each month — the BACB minimum. We track supervision hours, provide the required documentation for your renewal, and support your continuing education.

You must be an actively credentialed RBT before starting a placement at FCPS. If you've completed the 40-hour training and passed your competency assessment but haven't submitted your BACB application, we'll keep you in our talent pool and reach out once your credential is active.

Most placements involve students with autism spectrum disorders, but FCPS also has students with intellectual disabilities, emotional-behavioral disorders, and other conditions where ABA is prescribed. Assignments range from early elementary through high school and transition-age (up to 21). Your BCBA will orient you to your student's specific needs before you begin.

Both. Some students require dedicated one-to-one RBT support throughout the school day; others are served in specialized classrooms where an RBT rotates between 2–3 students. Your assignment depends on the student's IEP and FCPS staffing decisions.

The FCPS RBT schedule follows the academic calendar. Summer, holidays, weekends, and school-closure days are unpaid. Some RBTs work Extended School Year (ESY) programs in July if their assigned student qualifies — those hours are paid at your regular rate.

You can hold multiple part-time assignments as long as the schedules don't conflict and you can meet supervision requirements. Some RBTs pair a morning school assignment with an afternoon in-home ABA session. Let us know your availability.
