Private Duty Nursing (PDN) in a school setting is one-to-one nursing care for a specific student with significant medical needs. As an Eaglewings school-based PDN, you're assigned to a single student and you stay with that student throughout their school day — providing continuous nursing assessment, care plan execution, and rapid response to any medical concern.

This isn't a health-suite role where you see many students briefly. It's dedicated nursing care for one child with complex conditions such as tracheostomy management, ventilator support, gastrostomy tube feeding, seizure protocols, insulin-dependent diabetes, or complex medication regimens. The student's care plan — written by their primary care team and coordinated with the school nurse — is your daily roadmap.

Eaglewings supports every PDN clinician with oversight from our in-house Clinical Supervisor (an RN with 25+ years of experience) plus the FCPS school nursing team. You never work alone.

What Private Duty Nursing at FCPS Looks Like

A typical day for a Private Duty Nurse at FCPS includes:

Morning transition — meeting the student at arrival, receiving report from the caregiver or bus aide, and confirming the day's care needs and any overnight changes.
Care plan execution — administering scheduled medications, performing trach suctioning or ventilator checks, tube feedings, blood glucose monitoring, seizure observation, or whatever the individualized care plan requires.
Continuous assessment — watching for changes in respiratory status, alertness, skin integrity, hydration, or any indicator of the student's medical stability.
Documentation — recording every intervention, medication administration, output, seizure event, or observation in accordance with school and agency policy.
Support in the classroom — helping the student access academic instruction alongside their peers whenever their medical status allows. You're a nurse first, but you're also part of the educational team.
Emergency response — recognizing early warning signs, activating the school nurse and emergency response protocol, and communicating with parents and the medical home.
End-of-day handoff — reporting to the caregiver or afternoon transport, ensuring continuity of care.

Registered Nurse (RN) PDN

$46–48/hr

Higher-acuity students — trach/vent-dependent, complex seizure management, high-risk medication regimens, IV therapy, wound care, and situations requiring nursing assessment and judgment. Current MD RN license required.

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) PDN

$38–40/hr

Students with chronic conditions requiring medication administration, tube feedings, seizure monitoring, diabetic care, and daily nursing tasks under RN or MD supervision. Current MD LPN license required.

PDN Requirements

Current, unencumbered Maryland RN or LPN license — or a compact-state license valid for practice in Maryland.
Current BLS/CPR certification (American Heart Association or equivalent). PALS is a plus for pediatric-focused assignments.
1+ year of nursing experience preferred; pediatric or school-health experience strongly preferred but not required. If you're transitioning from hospital or LTC nursing, we orient you to the school setting during onboarding.
Ability to pass FBI + Maryland state background checks and pre-employment health clearance including TB screening.
Physical ability to lift/transfer students as needed, respond quickly to medical emergencies, and be on your feet for the school day.
Willingness to complete Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) documentation if you've worked in an MD school system before.
Comfortable committing to a consistent Monday–Friday school-day schedule and following the FCPS academic calendar.

Common Questions

FCPS Private Duty Nursing supports students with a range of complex medical needs: tracheostomies (with or without ventilators), gastrostomy tubes, seizure disorders (including uncontrolled seizures requiring emergency medication), insulin-dependent diabetes, severe cerebral palsy with respiratory involvement, and other conditions requiring continuous nursing observation. We'll match you to a student whose care needs fit your clinical background.

Private Duty Nursing is one-to-one. You're assigned to a single student and you stay with that student throughout the school day. This is what distinguishes PDN from a school-nurse or health-suite role, which serves many students briefly. If your student is absent, Eaglewings coordinates a substitute assignment or paid administrative time depending on the situation.

Clinical oversight comes from three sources: (1) the student's primary care team through the written care plan, (2) the FCPS school nurse at your assigned building, and (3) Eaglewings' Clinical Supervisor — an experienced RN available for clinical questions, escalation, and support. LPNs additionally work under RN or MD supervision as required by MD nursing scope of practice.

When your assigned student misses school (illness, appointments, family reasons), Eaglewings works to place you with another PDN student for the day, provide administrative/training hours, or arrange an alternative assignment. We don't leave nurses without pay during student absences whenever possible.

It's preferred but not required. If you're coming from adult hospital, LTC, or clinic nursing, we provide onboarding specific to school-based pediatric care and pair you with an experienced Eaglewings nurse during your first days. What matters most is your willingness to learn and your clinical judgment.

Care plans are living documents. If your student's medical needs escalate beyond LPN scope, or improve to where less-intensive support suffices, the care team will update the plan and Eaglewings will re-match staffing accordingly. Your commitment to the child stays central through any transition.

Some FCPS assignments involve shared PDN or classroom-embedded nursing where one RN supports 2–3 medically-involved students in the same specialized classroom. These roles pay at the RN PDN rate and are staffed based on the specific medical needs of the students in that classroom.
